"............Giving, finds a team of researchers at the University of Michigan, reduces mortality and promotes longevity. It doesn't matter whether the support is in the form of the kind of emotional support that spouses exchange or the instrumental help one might provide to a neighbor. Either way, it has a significant impact on the giver.I find it amazing when Scientific research reaffirms what we already know through our Deen.
And receiving has no impact whatsoever on mortality. Helping others reduces distress in givers, improves both mental and physical health. It gives people a sense of belonging and of mattering. It increases happiness, decreases depression. In short, it increases positive emotions. And positive emotions are good for the body, promoting cardiovascular health and boosting the immune system.
So now there's scientific proof:
Helping others is a way of helping yourself. "
"They prefer them to themselves, even if they themselves are needy," (59:9)
"They give food, despite their love for it, to the poor and orphans and captives..." (76:8 to the end)
and many hadiths "On preferring others and helping others "

Dont you love psyhochology! and Islam ofcourse :)

My chemistry teacher, Miss Tahira, always used to said, "Uper wala hath nechay walay hath say acha hotay hay,
The giving hand is better than the taking hand, or lol electron donors are better than electron acceptors"
lol..I dont quite remember why she considered electron donors better than electron acceptors, however, I do understand why the upper hand is better than the lower hand.
hOPE everyones having fun! :D LOL
enjoy the holidays for the 100th time,
TC

faray, miss tahira makes perfect sense to me.... electron donors are bringing 'positive' change in themselves. cant say the same about those electron acceptors. haha.
hammad, been a while since i picked a bone with you. time for some positive criticism finally!
positive feedback comes first: mashallah, very nice article. qualified criticism goes next: whats with this referencing style. take for example...
"They prefer them to themselves, even if they themselves are needy," (59:9)
okay so what? what about them? perhaps if you had quoted the verse to a slightly fuller extent..
"but those who .... prefer them to themselves, even if they themselves are needy... they are the ones that achieve prosperity." 59:9
and now we know that they will achieve prosperity!
... and similarly for the next reference too.. there is no clue in the referenced section whether the people mention are to be emulated or despised.. how about-
"As to the Righteous...They give food, despite their love for it, to the poor and orphans and captives...Allah will deliver them from the evil of that Day, and will shed over them a Light of Beauty and (blissful) Joy" 76:5-11
:D
will i be seeing you in t.o. after exam tomorrow night? drop me an email...
salam "khany,"
i approve of your 'qualified criticism'; however, one thing comes to mind - i'm not sure if you can incorporate a Qur'anic ayah in a sentence with "..." instead i would think it's best to include your added beginning and end of the sentence and in between quote the Qur'anic ayah (and i think brackets should go around the reference?)
so, for instance, i think it should be:
but those who "prefer them to themselves, even if they themselves are needy," they are the ones that achieve prosperity (59:9).
i believe that's how it's done, correct me if i'm wrong :)
wa salam.
salam anonymous,
im sorry i dont quite follow you. i hope i didn't end up incorporating my sentence with the referenced ayah.
"they are the ones that achieve prosperity" is actually part of the ayah. is this what the confusion is? please correct me if i have misunderstood.
wa salam khany,
i apologize, i should have read the ayah prior to making my comment. i did not realize that "they are the ones that achieve prosperity" was taken from the english translation. i guess my confusion came from the "..." that you had included- was that simply added because you took different portions of the ayah?
i hope i have made myself a little more clear...sorry about that :P
wa salam
salam anonymous,
i think we have a resolution :D the ayah goes on to list other qualities of those who "are the ones that achieve prosperity".
I included to '...' to indicate this was not the whole truth :P just part of the truth.
happy holidays.
wa salam khany,
all makes sense now :D. i apologize for jumping the gun and, at the same time, i want to thank you for teaching me something.
jazak'Allah khair :D
Anomynous and Khany,
Thanks for the enlightening Gramatical Exchange :-D....
I will make sure I refrence in a better way next time!
Happy Holidays both of you :-)
salams
