Quizing about Shabay Baraat...

Interesting video via GeoPakistani which interviews people in an urban area in pakistan about Shabay-Baraat ( in urdu). A big majority do not know what it is . (Of course these interviews were taken in one market in one city within the middle class areas so it cant claim to be truly representative but still it is sad viewing for it does represent a significant number of Pakistanis...)

salam hammad,

i feel the program was unfairly judgmental. how can you expect the common man to form a coherent opinion on the significance of the night when the scholars themselves seem divided?

i myself grew up never fully appreciating the mid shaban night. while our parents' generation is partly guilty of negligence in this matter, yet, i would like to rest some of the blame upon the shoulders of our religious leadership.

in an effort mask the difference of opinion on the matter each religious authority has vocalized its personal beliefs as fact. their diametrically opposed opinions have left parents clueless and it is no wonder the younger generation knows even less. would it diminish them to acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion on the matter? is it so difficult to say that "this" is what i believe and "that" is what some others believe?

i wonder if others share my frustration. my purpose is not to slander the 'ulema' but to criticize constructively.

it's really dissapointing
apart from parents, the media, the schools are to be partially blamed too for not giving the religous events the importance they deserve.

I agree with Syra. It is a failure of society in general. I think the religious leadership is not really leadership anymore and that they lost respect of the masses long time back. perhaps at the time of the british when they rejected english?

It is unfortunate that the situation with islam in south aisa is such that rejection or acceptance of religon can be attached to individuals ( like religious leaders) rathar than actual facts...( though I guess it can be argued that the leaders are the ones who should point the masses to the fact but the leaders for the most part have lost connection with the people on the stret..very vicious and sad cycle)

Some of the basic islamic knowledge should be something all people know because it is part of basics...which are taught from an early age..
