The Aunty Network

I am sure some of the people reading this have heard of the famous Aunty Network that exists within the South Asian community ( don't know about other cultures). When I came to Waterloo from Islamabad I thought with leaving South Asia I had said goodbye to the Aunty Network as well...However it was not long before I discovered that the Aunty Network is indeed Global and is alive and kicking even in Canada!

Figure 1 illustrates how each Aunty ( Note : In South Asia someone you call Aunty does not have to be related to you) is connected to other Auntys. As you can see the Network is extensive and it would be very hard to model each interaction that takes place inside the Aunty network. If you take the connecting lines as flow of information you can see that the source of any information is too hard to establish.....The connecting lines between the auntys have not been drawn to scale and can range across the globe. The Uncles do not come into the diagram however in some cases they may have a limited role. The Uncle network is almost non-existent when you compare it to the Aunty Network.

Figure 2 shows how facts can easily become fiction once they are processed in the Aunty Network which is not a surprise given the amount of information that each Aunty is handling.

Figure 3 illustrates the power of the Aunty network to hook up any random guy to a random girl once they are processed through the Aunty Network. What happens within the Network will require another post from me ........... :-)

The Aunty Network is strong.......

Had to laugh at that one. Hilarious, but so very true. Mind you, that sort of phenomenon is unheard of in other cultures. I'm glad I don't have an "aunty" to contend with. A friend of mine told me her extended family (and friends) were plotting potential marriage partners for her since she turned 15! I was horrified!

salam bro!
here are suggestions for futher elaboration. in my observation the dynamics of aunty network are such that they selectively amplify bad news. for example you can count on auntie network to pick up on the story of any desi boy gone astray in the minefield of western society and its distraction. yet equal numbers (or more) of them who get by uneventfully never appear on the aunty news radar!!

i summarize this as

amplification directly proportional to coefficient of news nastiness

Safiyyah: wow 15 is actually better then what I have seen...some even start thinking about this as soon as the girl is born! ( it happens more to girls then guys)

Yaser: you saying that from expirience ;-)?

hahaha Hammad rules!

Just to elaborate on something you said.. "...Aunty Network that exists within the South Asian community ( don't know about other cultures)".

There is a very similar network in the West Indies, including Guyana, the country my parents are from. It is unbelievable how the Aunties maintained this tradition even 5 or more generations after being away from India. Even more shocking is how this continues as my parents' and grandparents' generations have maintained it in Canada as well! This is a sign that the Aunty Network shall live on for many, many more generations to come!

Ah! You give too much credit to your gender! lol

But definately a hilarious post!! Let's see how many of us become vital members of the future-Aunty/Uncle network!

Adam: thanks for that info! so this is not a 1st generation thing then.....our wives and daughters will continue this inshah allah ..hmmmm..I wonder how "Auntees working outside of home " impacts the Network. This topic has so much research potential...

Fatima: The Uncle Network is a dependent of the Auntee Network hence it cannot survive independently from what I've seen. The AUntees do control the flow of information....:-)

I think I like uncles more. They seem to be more understanding, at least the uncles I've met.
Or maybe its just cuz I've always been closer to my father so I can relate to uncles more than aunties..hmmm..I find aunties and the sort very unique, baffling and mysterious creatures..Maybe they should have their own planet :D ;) (JOKES)

The best Aunties are ones who make the best food..(prathas, somosas, fruit chaats,...man!) .when you visit.and the best uncles are the ones who request the food from the aunties...when you visit :-D
